Gabion Tower- Gareth Litchy

Gareth Lichty

Gabion Tower

This sculpture is located in the garden.

Artist Gareth Lichty has constructed a replica of a southern Ontario water tower using Gabion baskets used in civil engineering. Gabion baskets are woven wire rectangular units that are typically filled with rock used to control water flow or drainage around roads, rivers and subdivisions. Lichty has reworked and re-woven the gabion wire to create a sculpture approximately 12 feet high. Situated in the Cambridge Sculpture Garden, the sculpture will be on display for two years. The piece is now planted with Virginia Creeper that scales the woven lattice wire structure. This is Lichty’s first outdoor permanent sculpture. Installation of the Sculpture was completed on September 24 2012.

The artist wishes to thank the Cambridge Sculpture Garden, Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council and the Waterloo Region Arts Fund.
